Product Overview

What Are Drum Storage Racks?

Drum storage racks — also known as oil drum racks, barrel storage shelving, drum cradle racks, or drum pallet racking — are purpose-built industrial storage systems designed to safely organise, stack, and dispense 55-gallon (208-litre) steel drums, plastic drums, fibre drums, IBC totes, and other cylindrical containers. Unlike standard pallet racking, drum racks feature contoured cradles, anti-roll stops, integrated spill sumps, and grounding points specifically engineered for the unique shape, weight, and hazardous-material compliance requirements of industrial drums.

The core challenge with drum storage is safety and regulatory compliance. Drums containing flammable liquids, corrosive chemicals, lubricants, or food-grade oils must be stored in compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910, EPA 40 CFR 264, NFPA 30 Flammable Liquids Code, and local fire department regulations. Non-compliant storage risks fines exceeding £50,000 per violation, environmental contamination liability, and catastrophic fire or chemical release incidents.

At Gieantech, we manufacture the full range of drum storage solutions — from horizontal cradle racks for dispensing to vertical stacking frames for high-density warehouse storage. All systems feature optional integrated spill containment sumps (110% capacity per EPA requirements), anti-static grounding lugs, and forklift-compatible designs. Fabricated in our 20,000 m² Dongguan factory and exported to 57+ countries.

Industry Pain Points

Why Drums Need Dedicated Storage Systems

Standard pallet racking is not designed for cylindrical containers. The risks are real — from regulatory fines to catastrophic spills.

Drum Roll-Off & Crushing

A full 55-gallon steel drum weighs 180–250 kg. Drums stored on standard flat shelves roll freely — one drum falling from a second tier generates enough force to crush a foot, rupture its seam, and release hundreds of litres of hazardous liquid across the warehouse floor.

Regulatory Non-Compliance

OSHA, EPA, NFPA 30, and IBC fire codes mandate specific storage requirements for drums containing flammable, corrosive, or toxic materials. Non-compliant storage triggers fines up to £70,000 per serious violation, facility shutdown orders, and personal criminal liability for safety managers.

Uncontained Spills

A single drum leak without spill containment can contaminate soil, groundwater, and storm drains — triggering EPA Superfund cleanup obligations costing £500,000 to £5 million. Regulations require 110% containment capacity for the largest drum stored. Floor storage without sumps is a ticking time bomb.

Wasted Floor Space

Drums stored single-layer on pallets waste 60–70% of available vertical space. A facility with 500 drums on floor pallets could reduce footprint by 65% with proper tiered drum racking — freeing thousands of square metres for production or additional inventory without facility expansion.

Key Advantages

Why Choose Gieantech Drum Storage Racks

Purpose-engineered for cylindrical containers — every feature addresses the unique challenges of safe drum handling.

Anti-Roll Drum Cradles

Contoured steel cradles with welded anti-roll stops secure each drum individually, preventing any lateral movement during storage, forklift transport, or seismic events. No more drums rolling off shelves — each position locks the drum in place mechanically.

110% Spill Containment

Integrated galvanised steel spill sumps capture 110% of the largest drum’s volume — meeting EPA 40 CFR 264.175 and NFPA 30 requirements. Removable grated decking allows visual inspection of sump contents. Optional polyethylene liners for chemical compatibility.

300% More Density

Multi-tier drum racks stack 2–3 layers of drums vertically, tripling storage density compared to single-layer floor pallets. A 500-drum facility can reduce its footprint by 65% — or store 1,500 drums in the same area without building expansion.

Fire Code Compliant

Open-frame steel construction allows sprinkler water penetration to every drum level, complying with NFPA 30 Flammable Liquids Code requirements. Steel construction is non-combustible (Class A). Proper aisle spacing and rack height configurations meet local fire marshal requirements.

Anti-Static Grounding

Integrated grounding lugs and bonding points on every rack module allow proper electrostatic grounding when storing flammable liquids. Prevents static discharge ignition during drum placement and dispensing operations — critical for solvents, fuels, and volatile chemicals.

Forklift Compatible

Fork pockets and 4-way forklift entry allow safe drum rack loading at height using standard warehouse forklifts. No specialised drum-handling attachments required for standard configurations. Optional drum clamp and rotator compatibility for automated loading.

Dispensing Ready

Horizontal cradle racks position drums at ergonomic dispensing height with integrated tap/spigot access points. Gravity-fed dispensing eliminates the need for pumps. Inclined cradle option ensures complete drum drainage — no product waste in the last 5% of drum contents.

Modular & Scalable

Starter + add-on modular design lets you begin with 4 drums and expand to hundreds. Bolt-together construction requires no welding on-site. Mix horizontal and vertical configurations in the same system. Hot-dip galvanised option for outdoor or high-humidity chemical storage areas.

Drum Rack Types

Drum Storage Solutions for Every Application

Choose from six rack configurations optimised for different drum types, volumes, and handling requirements.

Horizontal Cradle Rack

Most PopularDispensing

Side-mounted contoured cradles hold drums horizontally for gravity-fed dispensing via tap or spigot. 2–3 tiers with anti-roll stops. Ideal for workshops, production lines, and chemical mixing areas where drums need frequent tapping without pumps or drum tilters.

Vertical Stacking Frame

High DensityBulk Storage

Upright drum storage in 2–3 tier stackable frames with containment sumps per level. Drums remain sealed and upright — ideal for long-term warehouse storage of full, unopened drums. Forklift-loaded with fork pockets at each tier. Maximum density for drum warehousing.

Pallet Drum Rack

Pallet CompatibleFlexible

Standard pallet racking beams fitted with drum cradle inserts or contoured decking panels. Converts existing pallet rack infrastructure for drum storage without replacing the entire system. 4 drums per pallet position (standard 1200×800 mm pallet footprint).

Drum Carousel / Rotary

Space SavingEasy Access

Rotating carousel stores 4–8 drums in a compact footprint with 360° access to every drum from a single aisle position. Ideal for small workshops, paint mixing rooms, and lab environments where floor space is limited but every drum needs individual access.

FAQ

Drum Storage Rack Questions Answered

What drum sizes do your racks accommodate?

Our drum racks accommodate standard 55-gallon (208L) steel and plastic drums (Ø572–580 mm), 30-gallon drums (Ø480 mm), fibre drums (Ø400–570 mm), and stainless steel pharmaceutical drums. We also offer IBC tote racks for 1,000L containers and custom cradle profiles for non-standard drum diameters. Contact us with your specific drum dimensions for a custom fit.

Do your racks include spill containment?

Yes — integrated spill containment sumps are available on all rack configurations. Our containment sumps are sized to 110% of the largest drum’s volume, meeting EPA 40 CFR 264.175 secondary containment requirements. Sumps feature removable galvanised grating for visual inspection and drain plugs for controlled emptying. Polyethylene sump liners available for aggressive chemical compatibility.

Can I store flammable liquids on drum racks?

Yes. Our spill containment racks with anti-static grounding lugs are designed specifically for flammable liquid storage in compliance with NFPA 30. Open-frame steel construction allows sprinkler penetration. We design rack configurations with proper fire separation distances, aisle widths, and height limits per your local fire code. Always consult your fire marshal for site-specific requirements.

Horizontal or vertical — which is better?

Horizontal cradle racks are ideal when you need to dispense liquid directly from drums via taps or spigots — gravity does the work with no pumps needed. Vertical stacking frames are better for bulk storage of sealed, unopened drums where maximum density is the priority. Many facilities use both: vertical racks in the warehouse for bulk storage and horizontal cradles at point-of-use workstations.

Can I use existing pallet racking for drums?

Yes — our pallet drum rack inserts convert standard pallet racking beams into drum storage positions. Contoured cradle inserts or drum containment pallets fit standard 1200×800 mm pallet bays. This is the most cost-effective option if you already have pallet racking infrastructure and want to add drum storage without purchasing entirely new systems.

What finish is best for chemical storage environments?

For indoor chemical storage, our standard powder coat (60–100 μm) provides excellent corrosion resistance. For aggressive chemical environments, outdoor storage, or high-humidity areas, hot-dip galvanised (HDG 80–120 μm) is recommended. For pharmaceutical and food-grade applications, epoxy or polyester powder coat in food-safe formulations is available. Stainless steel construction for extreme corrosive or clean-room environments.

What is the minimum order quantity?

Standard MOQ is 20 units (negotiable for larger projects or repeat orders). We also accept mixed orders combining different drum rack configurations in a single shipment. Lead time is typically 15–25 days. Sample units available for evaluation before bulk orders.

Can drum racks be used outdoors?

Yes — our hot-dip galvanised (HDG) drum racks are designed for outdoor storage. We recommend adding lockable containment covers to prevent rainwater accumulation in spill sumps (which reduces effective containment capacity and creates a disposal problem). UV-resistant labels and stainless steel fasteners are standard on outdoor-rated units.

What warranty do you offer?

We provide a 5-year structural warranty covering frames, cradles, and welds against manufacturing defects. Spill containment sumps carry a 3-year leak-free warranty. Powder coat and HDG finishes are warranted against premature peeling or corrosion for 5 years. Extended warranties and annual inspection services available for hazmat storage installations.
