What Is Coil Racking?
Coil racking — also known as coil storage racks, coil cradle systems, steel coil shelving, or spool storage racks — refers to purpose-built industrial storage systems designed to safely support, organise, and protect cylindrical coiled materials including hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel coils, aluminium coils, copper strip, wire spools, cable reels, paper rolls, and plastic film rolls. Unlike standard pallet racking, coil racks feature contoured cradles, V-saddles, or spindle bars specifically engineered to match the unique geometry and extreme weight of industrial coils.
The core engineering challenge is concentrated load management. A single hot-rolled steel coil can weigh 10–30 tonnes, with all that mass concentrated in a small contact area. Standard flat shelves would buckle or deform instantly. Coil racks distribute this extreme point load through reinforced V-cradles, heavy-gauge structural steel frames, and engineered floor anchor systems — keeping each coil stable, accessible, and protected from telescoping, edge damage, and surface scratching.
At Gieantech, we manufacture the full range of coil storage solutions — from single-tier cradle racks for service centre slit coils to multi-level stacking pyramids for steel mill yards. All systems are fabricated in our 20,000 m² Dongguan factory using heavy-duty structural steel, precision-welded to handle the most demanding coil weights, and exported to metal processors in 57+ countries.

Why Coils Demand Dedicated Storage Systems
Coils are among the most dangerous and damage-prone items in any warehouse. Improper storage creates catastrophic risks.
Coil Roll-Away Fatalities
An unsecured 10-tonne steel coil on a flat floor can roll with as little as 2° incline. Once moving, it is unstoppable — coil roll-away incidents are among the most fatal warehouse accidents. OSHA reports multiple coil-crushing fatalities annually. Proper cradle racking with anti-roll chocks eliminates this risk entirely.
Telescoping & Edge Damage
Coils stacked eye-to-sky without proper support telescope (inner wraps shift sideways), crushing edges and rendering entire coils unusable. A single telescoped hot-rolled coil represents £5,000–15,000 in scrap loss. V-cradle racks prevent lateral movement and distribute support evenly across the coil width.
Wasted Floor Space
Coils stored single-layer on the floor with blocking waste 60–70% of available vertical space. A service centre with 500 coils on floor blocks could store 1,300+ coils with proper multi-tier racking in the same footprint — eliminating the need for costly facility expansion or additional outdoor yard space.
Surface Corrosion & Scratching
Coils in direct floor contact absorb moisture, causing rust stains on bottom wraps. Metal-on-metal cradle contact scratches polished aluminium and pre-painted coils. Elevated rack storage with protective liner pads keeps coils dry, ventilated, and scratch-free — preserving surface quality from receipt to processing.
Why Choose Gieantech Coil Storage Racks
Purpose-engineered for round, heavy, and damage-sensitive coiled materials — every feature addresses unique coil storage challenges.
Anti-Roll V-Cradles
Precision-formed V-saddle cradles with adjustable width positions secure each coil individually. 60–120° included angle distributes coil weight evenly across the support surface, preventing point-load deformation while eliminating any risk of lateral roll-away — even during seismic events.
30-Tonne Single Coil Capacity
Heavy-duty structural steel frames using H-beam columns and reinforced crossbars handle individual coils up to 30 tonnes. Engineered with finite element analysis (FEA) to verify stress distribution at every connection point. Safety factor 1.5× on all load-bearing components.
60% More Storage Density
Multi-tier coil racks (2–3 levels) stack coils vertically using crane loading, tripling floor utilisation compared to single-layer ground storage. Pyramid stacking configurations further optimise space by nesting upper coils between lower positions.
Zero Surface Damage
Replaceable rubber, HDPE, or timber cradle liner pads prevent metal-on-metal contact — essential for polished aluminium, pre-painted, and galvanised coils. Adjustable cradle spacing accommodates different coil widths without edge overhang that causes rim damage.
Adjustable Coil Positions
Cradle saddle spacing adjusts to match coil OD from 500 to 2,000 mm. Width dividers accommodate coil widths from 200 to 2,000 mm in the same rack frame. One rack system handles your full coil inventory — from narrow slit coils to wide master coils.
Air Circulation & Moisture Protection
Elevated coil storage keeps coils off the floor, allowing air circulation beneath and around every coil. Prevents moisture condensation and rust staining on bottom wraps. Critical for service centres storing coils in humid climates or non-climate-controlled warehouses.
Crane & Forklift Compatible
Top-loading design for overhead crane access (C-hook, coil grab, or coil lifter). Fork pockets on portable cradle units enable forklift repositioning. Clear overhead clearance ensures safe crane operation between rack rows without collision risk.
Modular & Scalable
Starter + add-on modular bays connect inline for continuous coil storage runs. Add tiers vertically or bays horizontally as inventory grows. Hot-dip galvanised option for outdoor steel yard storage exposed to weather, rain, and UV.
Coil Storage Solutions for Every Material Type
Choose the configuration that matches your coil weight, diameter, material sensitivity, and handling equipment.
Cradle Rack (V-Saddle)
Single or multi-tier V-saddle racks holding coils in eye-to-sky orientation. Adjustable saddle spacing fits coil ODs from 500 to 2,000 mm. The industry standard for steel service centres, aluminium processors, and wire mills. Crane-loaded from above, each coil individually accessible.
Stacking Pyramid Frame
Pyramid stacking with steel chock frames allowing upper coils to nest in the valley between lower coils. Maximises vertical density for uniform-diameter coils. Ideal for steel mill yards and high-volume stock holding where space is at a premium and coil diameters are consistent.
Cantilever Coil Rack
Horizontal cantilever arms with cradle saddles store coils in eye-through (horizontal axis) orientation. Forklift coil rams load from one side. Best for slit coils, narrow strip coils, and wire spools that need horizontal orientation for feeding into processing machinery.
Vertical Coil Rack
Upright storage on reinforced flat or contoured platforms with anti-roll rings. Coils sit eye-to-sky for overhead crane access. Designed for heavy steel master coils where the full coil weight must be supported on a flat, reinforced steel platform rather than V-cradle contact points.
A-Frame Coil Rack
Inclined A-frame supports lean coils against padded rails at 10–15° angle. Ideal for thin-gauge pre-painted or laminated coils that cannot bear cradle point-loading without surface marking. Gravity holds coils in place without chains or clamps.
Motorised Coil Storage
Motorised V-cradle platforms on rail tracks for automated coil positioning. Coils crane-loaded onto cradle cars that index to assigned storage positions. Integrates with coil management software for FIFO/LIFO tracking. Premium solution for high-throughput service centres with 1,000+ coils.
Anatomy of a Coil Storage Rack
Every component is engineered for extreme loads, precision coil support, and long-term durability.
Structural Steel Frame
H-beam or box-section columns (Q235B/Q345B) with full-penetration welds at all load-bearing joints. Column sections sized by FEA for the maximum coil weight at each tier. Base plates with Grade 10.9 chemical anchor bolts for secure floor fixing in concrete slabs rated for heavy coil loads.
V-Saddle Cradles
Precision-formed steel V-cradles with 60–120° included angle, matched to coil OD range. Bolt-adjustable saddle positions along the crossbar allow repositioning for different coil widths. Reinforced contact surfaces rated for point loads up to 30 tonnes per coil position.
Protective Liner Pads
Replaceable cradle liner pads in rubber (EPDM), HDPE, hardwood timber, or felt. Prevents metal-on-metal contact that scratches polished aluminium, pre-painted, and galvanised surfaces. Quick-change pad system — swap pads in minutes when worn without disassembling the cradle.
Anti-Telescoping Stops
Adjustable side stops or end plates prevent lateral coil movement (telescoping) during storage. Position-lockable along the cradle to match exact coil width. Critical for slit coils and narrow strips that are prone to sideways shift under their own weight or from vibration.
Crossbars & Tier Beams
Heavy-gauge I-beam or channel-section crossbars span between columns to support cradle saddles. Multi-tier racks use intermediate beams with bolted connections for field-adjustable tier heights. All beams designed for concentrated load at mid-span (worst-case single coil centred).
Identification & Safety
Coil ID tag holders, barcode/RFID mounting brackets, and load capacity labels at each position. High-visibility end-of-row markers for crane operator sightlines. Anti-collision bumpers at aisle-facing ends. Optional seismic restraint brackets for Zone IV installations.

Coil Racking FAQ
Our coil racks handle the full range of coiled materials: hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel coils (up to 30 tonnes), aluminium foil and sheet coils, copper strip, stainless steel, wire rod coils, cable reels, paper rolls, plastic film rolls, and textile beams. Each rack type is engineered with appropriate cradle profiles, liner materials, and load ratings for the specific coil material.
Our heavy-duty cradle racks and vertical racks support individual coils up to 30 tonnes (30,000 kg) with total bay loads up to 60 tonnes. Each rack is structurally designed with FEA analysis to verify stress distribution at the maximum rated coil weight. The 1.5× safety factor means a 30-tonne rated position is tested to 45 tonnes.
We use replaceable cradle liner pads — HDPE for aluminium, felt pads for pre-painted surfaces, and rubber (EPDM) for general steel coils. The liner material is selected based on your coil’s surface sensitivity. For high-value aluminium and automotive body panel coils, we recommend A-frame racks that eliminate cradle contact entirely, supporting coils by leaning against padded rails.
Yes. We offer hot-dip galvanised (HDG) finish with 80–120 μm zinc coating for outdoor steel yard installations. HDG coil racks withstand rain, UV, temperature cycling, and salt-spray environments without corrosion. Concrete foundations with chemical anchor bolts are required for outdoor installations to handle wind loads and ground conditions.
Eye-to-sky stores coils vertically with the bore (eye) facing upward — loaded by overhead crane with C-hook or coil grab. This is the standard for heavy steel coils. Eye-through stores coils horizontally with the bore facing sideways — loaded by forklift with coil ram through the bore. This is preferred for lighter slit coils and wire spools that feed directly into processing machines.
For eye-to-sky storage: overhead bridge crane (5–50 tonne capacity) with C-hook, coil grab, or vacuum lifter. For eye-through storage: forklift with coil ram attachment (2–10 tonne capacity). For portable cradle units with fork pockets, a standard counterbalanced forklift can reposition empty racks. We design rack row spacing based on your crane span and hook travel.
Minimum order is 10 bays (negotiable for large-scale projects). Standard lead time is 20–35 days from order confirmation to ex-works. Complex structural designs or large volumes may extend to 40–50 days. We provide a production schedule with milestone updates at key fabrication stages.
Absolutely. All our coil racks are custom-engineered. Whether you have extra-wide coils (2,000 mm+), unusually heavy coils (25–30 T), very small slit coils (200 mm OD), or non-circular coiled materials, we design bespoke cradle profiles, frame dimensions, and tier configurations to fit your exact inventory. Share your coil data sheet and we’ll return a custom rack proposal within 48 hours.
10-year structural warranty covering frame, cradle, and crossbar integrity under rated load conditions. 5-year warranty on powder coat finish. 15-year anti-corrosion warranty on HDG (hot-dip galvanised) finish. Cradle liner pads are consumable wear items replaceable as needed — we supply replacement pads at cost.
