What Is Pallet Storage Racking?
Pallet storage racking — also referred to as pallet rack systems, pallet shelving, or palletised storage structures — is the category of industrial steel racking specifically engineered to store goods on standard pallets (1200×1000 mm, 1200×800 mm Euro, 48×40” GMA, or custom sizes). Unlike general shelving designed for loose items, pallet storage racking is load-rated for the concentrated weight of fully loaded pallets — typically 500 to 4,000 kg per beam level — and sized for forklift access at every storage position.
The defining advantage of pallet storage racking is unitised handling: goods stay on their pallets from inbound receiving through storage to outbound shipping, eliminating manual handling, reducing product damage, and enabling mechanical handling with forklifts, reach trucks, and turret trucks. A single forklift operator can move 1–2 tonnes in under 60 seconds — a productivity level impossible with manual shelving or floor stacking.
At Gieantech, we manufacture a complete range of pallet storage racking systems — from basic selective racks for small warehouses to fully automated 4-way shuttle systems handling 50,000+ pallet positions. Every system is engineered from premium Q235B/Q345B steel, manufactured in our 20,000 m² Dongguan factory, load-tested to a 1.5× safety factor, and backed by international certifications including ISO 9001, CE, and AS 4084. We ship to 57+ countries with full export documentation and remote installation support.

The Hidden Cost of Inefficient Pallet Storage
Without engineered pallet racking, warehouses suffer compounding losses across space, time, safety, and inventory accuracy.
Floor-Stacked Pallets
Single-level floor stacking wastes 70–80% of available cubic volume. With 10 m ceilings, you're paying rent on 7+ metres of empty air above your inventory — the most expensive unused space in any logistics operation.
Crushed & Damaged Goods
Stacking pallets directly on top of each other transfers the full load through the products below. Fragile, temperature-sensitive, or irregularly shaped goods suffer crushing, deformation, and spoilage — costing 2–5% of inventory value annually.
Inaccessible Inventory
When pallets are block-stacked, accessing bottom or rear pallets requires moving every pallet above and in front. This double-handling inflates labour costs by 40–60% and makes FIFO/FEFO date rotation virtually impossible.
Forklift Safety Risks
Unstable pallet stacks, unmarked traffic zones, and forklifts manoeuvring in congested areas create a high-risk environment. Over 85 forklift fatalities and 34,000 serious injuries occur annually in the U.S. alone — proper racking infrastructure is a life-safety investment.
Why Invest in Pallet Storage Racking
Engineered pallet racking converts every cubic metre of your building into productive, accessible, protected storage.
5× Storage Density
Multi-level pallet racking converts wasted overhead space into productive storage tiers. A standard 10 m warehouse with 5-level selective racking stores 5 times more pallets than floor stacking — delaying facility expansion by years.
Full Product Protection
Every pallet rests on dedicated steel beams — no weight transfers through the goods below. Fragile electronics, temperature-sensitive food, and high-value goods are protected from crushing, moisture, and contamination at every level.
Instant Pallet Access
Selective systems provide 100% direct access to every pallet position from the aisle. No shuffling, no double-handling — forklifts retrieve any pallet in under 60 seconds. FIFO, LIFO, and FEFO rotation strategies become operationally viable.
Optimised Forklift Flow
Structured aisles create defined travel paths with proper clearances for your specific forklift fleet. One-way traffic loops, designated put-away aisles, and picking zones reduce travel distance by 30–40% and eliminate dangerous cross-traffic.
WMS-Ready Locations
Every beam level becomes a scannable storage address (aisle–bay–level). Barcode or RFID location labels integrate with your WMS for real-time inventory visibility, cycle counting, and directed put-away — achieving 99.5%+ inventory accuracy.
All-Environment Rated
Hot-dip galvanised frames and sealed hardware operate from -35°C frozen to +50°C ambient without corrosion or brittleness. Ideal for cold chain, wet-process food plants, outdoor yards, and humid tropical climates alike.
Modular & Expandable
Start with the bays you need today and expand incrementally. Clip-in beams, bolt-together frames, and starter-plus-add-on modules let you grow without dismantling existing racking — protecting your initial investment as volumes scale.
Automation-Ready
Today’s manual pallet racking can be upgraded tomorrow with radio shuttle carts, conveyor infeeds, RFID tracking, or full AS/RS crane integration. Our racking is designed with retrofit-compatible tolerances to future-proof your investment.
Complete Range of Pallet Storage Solutions
From 100% selectivity to 90% density — choose the pallet racking system that matches your inventory profile and throughput targets.

Selective Pallet Racking
Direct forklift access to every single pallet — no shuffling required. The most versatile and widely deployed pallet storage system worldwide, ideal for high-SKU operations requiring fast pick rates and full FIFO capability.

Drive-In Pallet Racking
Forklifts drive directly into deep lanes storing 6–12 pallets per row. Eliminates aisles between bays for 85% space utilisation. The go-to solution for bulk storage of homogeneous products — especially cold storage and seasonal buffer stock.

VNA Pallet Racking
Wire or rail-guided turret trucks operate in 1.5–1.8 m aisles — 50% more pallet positions than standard selective while retaining 100% selectivity. The premium choice for high-value warehouses where every square metre counts.

Radio Shuttle Racking
Battery-powered shuttle carts move pallets within deep lanes at 1.5 m/s — no forklift entry needed. Up to 40 m lane depth. Combines high-density storage with semi-automated throughput for 3PL, FMCG, and cold chain operations.

Double Deep Racking
Two pallets deep per side accessed with a deep-reach truck. 40% more pallet positions than single-deep selective with 50% fewer aisles. An excellent mid-range solution balancing storage density and pallet accessibility for distribution centres.

Automated Storage (AS/RS)
Stacker cranes or 4-way shuttles handle pallets automatically in high-rise racking up to 30 m. 99.9% pick accuracy, 24/7 unmanned operation, and WMS/ERP integration. The ultimate pallet storage solution for lights-out warehousing.
Anatomy of a Pallet Storage Rack
Every pallet racking installation is assembled from these precision-engineered structural components.
Upright Frames
Roll-formed Q235B/Q345B steel columns (1.5–2.5 mm) with diagonal and horizontal bracing. Available in teardrop, keyhole, or bolt-together profiles. Frames carry all vertical loads from beam levels to the floor plate. Powder-coated or hot-dip galvanised (80–120 μm).
Pallet Beams
Box-section or step-profile beams rated 500–5,000+ kg per pair. Clip-in, pin-lock, or bolt connections with safety locking pins to prevent accidental dislodging during forklift pallet placement. Orange powder coat standard; custom RAL colours available.
Pallet Supports
Wire mesh decking, steel shelf panels, or timber bearers spanning between beams. Wire mesh is preferred for fire sprinkler compliance (NFPA 13), visibility, and air circulation. Support type selected based on pallet condition and load distribution requirements.
Frame Bracing & Ties
Cross-aisle and down-aisle bracing tubes connect frame rows for lateral stability. Row spacers maintain consistent back-to-back spacing. Essential for double-row configurations and high-rise installations above 6 m to resist seismic and forklift impact forces.
Safety Accessories
Column guards, end-of-aisle barriers, anti-collapse mesh, pallet backstops, and rack-mounted signage. Safety yellow powder coat for high visibility. These components protect both the racking structure and the operators working around it.
Base Plates & Anchors
Heavy-gauge base plates (6–8 mm) distribute frame loads across the concrete slab. Chemical or mechanical expansion anchors secure each upright to the floor, preventing overturning and meeting seismic Zone IV requirements for high-rise pallet storage.

Pallet Storage Racking Across Industries
Any operation that moves goods on pallets benefits from engineered pallet storage racking.
3PL & Distribution
Third-party logistics providers handle diverse clients with unpredictable inventory profiles. Selective pallet racking delivers the flexibility to store anything from single pallets to full-bay lots with 100% accessibility and fast client onboarding.
Cold Storage & Frozen
Temperature-controlled facilities cost 3–5× more per m³ than ambient warehouses. Drive-in and shuttle pallet racking maximise density in -35°C environments with HDG frames, reducing energy cost per pallet position and justifying the facility investment.
Food & Beverage
HACCP and food-safety regulations demand clean, organised storage with strict FIFO date rotation. Pallet flow racking ensures oldest stock ships first, while drive-in systems buffer seasonal production runs before retail distribution.
Manufacturing
Raw material staging, WIP buffering between production lines, and finished goods consolidation all depend on structured pallet storage. Selective racking stages sub-assemblies, while deep-lane systems buffer bulk components for just-in-time line feeding.
Pharmaceutical & Healthcare
GDP/GMP compliance demands temperature mapping, batch traceability, quarantine zones, and FEFO picking. Pallet racking with WMS-integrated location labels and segregated zones ensures full regulatory compliance for medicines and medical devices.
Retail & FMCG
Regional distribution centres serving retail chains combine selective pallet racking for full-case picking with push-back or flow systems for high-velocity SKUs. Pallet racking is the backbone enabling omnichannel fulfilment at retail scale.
Automotive & Parts
Aftermarket parts distribution stores thousands of SKUs across wide weight ranges. Multi-level selective pallet racking handles heavy engine blocks on lower levels and lighter components on upper tiers within the same bay structure.
Building Materials
Heavy, bulky construction materials — bags of cement, tile pallets, steel fittings — require robust pallet racking rated for concentrated point loads. Wide-span bays and heavy-duty beams accommodate oversized pallets and irregular load shapes safely.

Pallet Size & Racking Compatibility Guide
The foundation of any pallet storage racking design is the pallet footprint. Bay width, frame depth, beam capacity, and aisle clearance are all calculated from the pallet dimensions and load weight. Using the wrong pallet–racking combination leads to wasted space, unsafe overhangs, or load-bearing failures.
Gieantech manufactures racking compatible with every international pallet standard — and custom sizes. Our engineering team designs beam spans and frame depths to optimise the number of pallets per bay while maintaining safe clearances (minimum 75 mm between pallets and 100 mm from the upright face) per ISO 15629 and FEM 10.2.07 guidelines.
Euro Pallet (EPAL)
The European standard. Dominant in EU, UK, and Middle East markets. Compatible with EUR pool systems and most global supply chains. Our default bay design accommodates 2 or 3 Euro pallets per level.
GMA Pallet (North America)
The Grocery Manufacturers Association standard used across USA, Canada, and Latin America. Slightly deeper than Euro pallets — requires 1,000–1,100 mm frame depth for proper support.
Australian Standard
Square footprint standard used in Australia and New Zealand. AS 4084 certified racking designed specifically for these pallets. Popular in FMCG, retail, and grocery distribution Down Under.
Asia Pacific Standard
Common across Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia. Also used in chemical and pharmaceutical industries globally. Square format optimises container loading for Asian export trade routes.
Custom / Oversized Pallets
Non-standard sizes for drums, IBC containers, machinery, and specialty loads. We engineer bay width, frame depth, and beam capacity specifically for your custom pallet footprint and weight.
